Experiential Notes for Virginia Coastal Plain/Tidewater Region Zone 7B/8A:

If left in ground after autumn harvest season, cut back and it will overwinter very well and give blooms next spring and beyond. I find it gets spindly in the heat of summer but if you cut it back in July and keep it disbudded, it will bloom again in autumn with thickened stems. Or you can continue letting it bloom and pluck flowers for edible purposes, but in order to get more than one bloom period, you must prevent seed formation hormones from advancing by deadheading often in some way, to your preference.
